Description

Why this service is great

  • Convenience – Drop off on your schedule; no waiting for pickups or extra clutter at home.
  • Affordability – At $14/month, it’s a cost-effective way to compost sustainably.
  • Community-focused – We’re partnering with local communities and gardens. You can choose to donate your share of vermicompost if you’d like to support local green spaces.

Important guidelines

  • Keep the drop-off area clean: make sure lids are closed, and only place food scraps directly into the bins.
  • Large loads (over 20 gallons) require prior notice — email info@thewormies.com or text 616-322-1677 before coming.
  • Not accepted: Bags of leaves/yard waste (this program is designed for food‐scraps), any plastics, metals, glass, bioplastics or compostable bags. Contaminants disrupt our process.
  • Please do not bag or tie your scraps in compostable bags — we cannot accept bags.
  • If you’d like to bring yard waste or need a larger drop-off, let us know and we’ll coordinate accordingly.

What to compost with Wormies?

Our service is designed for food waste collection however you can feel free to add yard waste as well in the bucket. A basic guideline for what to compost with us: any plants or parts of it; fresh, past due, dried, cooked, raw or processed. Any meat and bones; fresh, past due, dried, cooked, raw or processed.

We do not accept bioplastics of any kind or brand. This is to avoid the risk of petroleum based plastics that often times look like compostable plastics and causes confusion and contamination. Unfortunately we do not have the capacity to deal with such contamination and we like our soil healthy!

We do not accept contaminants such as stickers, rubber-band, gloves, twist-ties, wrappers, aluminum foil, parchment paper, plastics, metal or glass.

Our Process and Compost Products

We’ll compost your food scraps and give you rich vermicompost in return. Every 3 months we will give you a complimentary 1/4 gal bag of our premium vermicompost valued at $10. Use it to nourish your houseplants, yard, or garden. One cup per plant 2-4 times a year is all you need. You can opt to donate it to community gardens that we partner with.

Composting is a natural process and it has been occurring for millennia and will continue to do so with or without our help. What we do at Wormies is to work with nature, observe, mimic and harness to reverse the effects of pollution. Soil regeneration and carbon sequestering are some of the environmental benefits of composting with us.

Ours is a tree step process, first we pre-compost our feedstock for 21 days through thermophilic composting that heats up to 100°-140°F. Then we feed the pre-composted material to red wiggler worms. The worms process the material further and finer and add a unique set of bacteria, hormones and enzymes through their gut action. Once worms are done munching we let the pile of finished compost cure for another 60 days and the party continues, beneficial bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes, arthropods and earthworms are present.
